Recognition and thankfulness. That was the tone of the speech of the President of the South American Sports Organization – ODESUR, Carlos Arthur Nuzman at the opening of the ODESUR General Assembly, held on this Friday morning, March 7th, in Santiago. When opening the meeting, Nuzman made a special thanks to the Chilean government, the Olympic Committee of Chile and the Organizing Committee for the X South American Games Santiago 2014 for the determination to hold this competition. “The ODESUR recognizes the effort and commitment of Chile to make the South American Games after the earthquake in 2010, which unfortunately made so many victims. The story is written in a strong way when in need of overcoming the pain. This feeling that unites us here in Santiago magnifies the history of the sport in South America”, said the president of ODESUR.

The South American Games Santiago 2014 will be opened this Friday at 22pm, at the National Stadium in the Chilean capital.

Nuzman also thanked the work of the 14 National Olympic Committees comprising the ODESUR for the development of the sport in South America.  “The sport in our continent has grown greatly due to the hard work of every Olympic Committee in their countries. This has helped to enhance the practice of sports in society, particularly among the youth, and to reveal new talents for high performance sports in our continent. We are glad with this scenario, while it increases our responsibility to further raise attainment levels.

Many of the 3.543 participating athletes here in Santiago 2014 will be at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. We are committed to keep the athletes dream ahead”, he concluded.

The South American Beach Games in Vargas, Venezuela, were confirmed for the period of 14-24th May with the presence of the 14 countries that comprise the ODESUR. During the Assembly, several presentations were made: the Organizing Committees of Santiago 2014, Cochabamba 2018 (BOL) – next country to host the South American Games, Vargas 2014 (VEN), Pimentel (PER) – headquarters of the South American Beach Games in 2015, Toronto 2015 host of the next Pan American Games, and the final report of the First South American Youth Games, held in 2013 in Lima (PER).

The next ODESUR General Assembly will be in 2015, in Asuncion, Paraguay.
