The first page of the history of the South American Games
was written in the Bolivian heights of La Paz (with some
events taking place in Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de La
Sierra), between the 3rd and the 12th day of November
1978. The South Cross Games (as the South American Games
were called then) had the participation of eight countries:
Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay
and Uruguay. A total of 480
athletes competed for medals in 16 sports: Artistic
Gymnastics, Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing,
Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Judo, Shooting,
Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
Argentina won 189 medals –
91 gold ones - conquering the position at the top of
the charts. Chile finished second, with 31 gold medals
and Bolivia came in third, with 20.
