The growing importance of the South American Games was
confirmed in 1990. On December 1st, Alberto Fujimori,
president of Peru, declared opened the fourth edition
of the Games in a magnificent ceremony in Lima’s
National Stadium. Once again,
ten countries joined the event. Colombia was absent
but Surinam made its debut in the South American Games.
The number of athletes continuously grew: 1,070 went
to Lima and to the cities of Arequipa and Trujillo and
competed in 16 sports: Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics,
Baseball, Bowling, Boxing, Cycling, Fencing, Judo, Swimming,
Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Sailing, Shooting,
Weightlifting and Wrestling.
Argentina won 187 medals –
68 gold ones – conquering the position at the
top of the charts one more time. Peru, competing at
home, came in second position with a total of 185 medals
– 50 gold – followed by Chile with 138 medals
- 40 gold.
