From the 21st to the 31st of October 1998, the city of
Cuenca, in Ecuador, was the capital of sports in South
America, celebrating the VI South American Games. Five
other cities - Gualaceo, Paute, Guayaquil, Salinas and
Quito – also hosted the competitions. The
South American Torch, lit in Tiahuanaco, Bolivia, passed
by Guayaquil and arrived in Cuenca the night before
the Opening Ceremony. For the first time, the Guyana
sent a delegation to compete with 14 other nations in
24 sports. A total of 1,525 athletes took part in the
Games with a record number of 1,115 medals.
Argentina won 235 medals –
101 gold – conquering, once again, the position
at the top of the charts. Colombia came in second, with
74 gold medals and a total of 179 medals. Brazil and
Venezuela were tied in the third position with the same
number of gold medals – 50 each – but Brazil
had a better overall result, with a total of 153 medals
against Venezuela’s 126 medals.
